Hi Ian

Like most others on the list, I do not know too much about EOS cameras and
lenses.

However, your other choices I can comment on. The Vivitar 90-180 macro has an
excellent reputation, but can be expensive, and difficult to find; one with
Olympus mount was recently sold on eBay for around $330. You can see more info
on this lens at
http://www.cameraquest.com/viv90180.htm
Note that it goes to 1:2 at 180mm (and f4.5 - fixed max aperture).

The Tamron AF 70-300 macro has max. magnification of 1:3.8 (I do not know if
this is only at 70mm).

A Tamron MF 60-300 3.5-5.4 has a max. ratio of 1:1.5 (at 60mm). This lens also
has a fine reputation; I have one (maybe for sale, as I also have a Zuiko
85-250).
