[OM] Macro shots

OK, I'm playing around with macro shots (its time to take a stab at the
TOPE) and besides the fact that getting enough light on a given subject is a
major exercise in and of itself, I can deal with it. I've run into something
else that's making me crazy.

How do those of you that shoot a fair amount of macro cope with getting a
'stable platform'? While I can see that for static items--like coins,
household objects and the like--it would not be all that difficult, pictures
'out & about' are a challenge.

I've got a tripod (not the best, I'll admit, it's only a Slik) but mounting
the camera on the tube beneath it isn't all that useful, as then everything
is upside down. Not to mention that changing positions much at all means
moving the whole blasted assembly around.

Anybody have a more creative solution for getting down close to the ground
(preferably with the camera body right side up)?
