Thanks to everyone for the many answers for the Macro Shots question.

By the way, my Slik *does* have adjustable legs and therefore can get close
to the ground. I should have been looking at it while composing my question,
rather than simply going by memory.

Truly, however, I was looking for something a) smaller b) simpler and c)
having some sort of adjustable rack assembly that would allow fine
positioning of the camera *without* moving the whole mess. One of my good
friends is a machinist, perhaps I can get him to help me whip something up
to solve requirement c).

There's lots of good alternatives I've been informed of here, though
(especially for items a) and b)), but it appears I should have been more
specific in my question :-)

Thanks again, everyone.

Scott,

While you contemplate a more permenant and adaptable solution, try brazing
a piece of bolt to the top of a spike. You can then add your tripod head
to it and adjust the height by the amount of pressure you apply to force it
into the ground. It's simple and light too.
