The week before Easter my family and I spent 4 days in the Little
Desert National Park . This is about 350 km west of Melbourne. We
camped at Horseshoe Bend on the bank of the Wimmera River, about 10km
out of Dimboola. The kids were not interested in photography this time
although we took my son?s OM40 and my daughters AF10. They were more
interested in mucking around on the river in the two Kayaks we took
with us. At night though we set the OM40 on the tripod and took some
photo?s of the night sky. Also took some of the family sitting around
the campfire. This was done using the light of the fire. Exposure was
around 10 to 20 seconds, ( only a small fire ).
We also had fun taking pictures of a River Redgum. Again the the
camera was set on the tripod . The shutter set on ?B? and held open
with a cable release. ( Why don?t the new wonderbricks have provision
for these useful cheap devices instead of using very expensive pieces
of wire and a switch! ). My son then painted the tree with a torch.
Flash would have been better but he didn?t bring that. The exposure
time was from 10 seconds to 30 seconds with 400asa film. The lens was
the 35 to 70 zoom used at 35mm. The thirty second exposure showed some
trailing in the stars but still acceptable. The end result was the
tree with the southern cross in the black sky above. The kids were
really pleased with results.
