actually, i find these intermediate stops more limiting. most often when i am using transparency film i need to bracket 1/3 stops which are much easier to contol w/o an intermediate stop. in this operation the aperature does change according to position even though it is not "set" on a specific number. on most large and medium format view cameras there is no definite position for the f-stop setting to reside, rather it relies on the positioning of the lever at the appropriate mark on the lens. i think that the f-stop convention used on 35mm lenses was implemented because it is easier to know where one is on the f-stop ring w/o looking at the lens.
