I have some thoughts about depth of field and macro. Why not set up a macro
system with the subject lit up by a ring of laser light. The ring or plane
of laser light would be perpendicular to the film/bellows/lens axis and could
be achieved with a rotating laser and a few mirrors so that the subject is lit
all around, but only in one plane. In this manner only the part of the subject
that is in focus is lit up. The plane of focus would be congruent (old geometry
word!!) with the plane of light. The parts not in focus would not be exposed
because there wouldn't be any light.
Now the tricky part is to move the subject in the plane of focus/plane of
light. If you just move the subject in this plane it won't work because all of
the images will be superimposed on the same spot. If the magnification was 1:1,
and the camera, bellows, lens unit were moved toward the subject and the
subject was diagonal or receding in the film of view, would this work?
Is anyone game in trying to take apart an old copier to try this?
BTW, my head hurts trying to envision a 3-D moving set up in my one-dimensional
brain.
