Wayne,

If a 50mm and a 90mm lens can achieve an equal maginification/view,  they
will be achieved at different filmplane to subject distances due to the
angle of view difference between them. The difference in the length of the
hands in the clock analogy was representative of that difference. Even at
the same magnification, they will have a different perspective of the
subject. This is similar to how you can fill the frame with a subject's face
with either a 50mm or 90mm. The 50mm must be much closer and will be
exhibiting a different perspective, even though the relative subject size on
the film frame is the same for both lenses.
