Hmmm. I wonder if the XA-2 is different - there's a ball bearing, but no
cylindrical roller. There's a plastic rail on the camera that fits into the
groove on the front inside of the lens cover that has some silverish
deposits on it that I thought were left by rubbing on the BB.

I've got an XA (not XA-2) Repair Manual. As best as I can make out from the
picture, there should be a small cylindrical roller that fits in a notch
under the lens cover just inboard from the rewind crank. The cover then
snaps on, trapping that roller in place. According to the manual, the cover
back slot should be mated first, then the one on the lower front. It appears
that said roller is both the "bearing" for the cover and the "stop" by
dropping into a detent at either end of the cover's travel.

One last question for any helpful XA-ers?

I'm jury-rigging the door assembly on my XA2 by putting small pieces of tape
in the channel on the inside of the door, lined up to the midline of the
viewfinder.

The location is shown in red at
http://rubicon.kataan.org/private/xa-cover.jpg

There's a channel at that point on the front where it looks like the ball
bearing rolled, and somehow it would make the door slide easier and make the
door click into place when it is fully opened.

I'd like to put the BB back the way it originally came - I like having the
door stay in place when it's open; now I'm a little worried about the door
sneaking over part of the shutter/viewfinder.

I caught the BB when it came out, but couldn't tell exactly where it came
from. Should it be in the channel on the front side, or the channel on the
back side?

Thanks,
