I know this has been discussed at times in the past and I've heard you
don't want to use alkaline batteries. However, I sometimes confuse
myself trying to remember what I'm not supposed to buy. So, could
someone tell me, and all of us once and for, all which battery(s) is the
best to use in the following series of bodies:

OM-1, OM-2, OM-3, and OM-4?

OM-1:
PX625 Mercury (this is what it was designed for); there are some equivalent numbers for the same cell.

OM-2, OM-2n, OM-2S, OM-3, OM-3ti, OM-4, and OM-4T:
SR44W sliver cells (the "W" suffix indicates it's a watch battery). They are also known as "357" cells using the alternate watch battery numbering scheme. You can also use the SR44 which is very slightly different

And second, in the past a list member would periodically offer the now
hard to find batteries for the OM-1. Does anyone know of a current
source of those, in the US?

In the U.S. it is illegal to sell or ship mercury cells.

Alternatives:
1. The MR-9 which adapts the battery compartment to a silver cell and drops the voltage of it to that of the mercury. 2. A "625" zinc-air cell (which has an operating voltage nearly identical to a mercury cell). 3. An adapter ring that allows using the "675" zinc-air hearing aid cell (much easier to find than the 625 zinc air cell). 4. John Hermanson's conversion of the metering and battery "box" to a sliver cell (this is included with a CLA).
