<< It seems like I once read some photographer recommended that you have
lenses that were multiples of 1.8 (or some kind of factor) in mm to get
decent useful spread of lenses for money spent. Can anybody remember: 1.
What that multiple is? 2. Who said it? and probably most important 3.
Is/was it viewed as good advice or voodoo photography. >>

I believe the factor was 1.4, which was justified as the minimum for
producing a significantly different view. It has been in numerous
references over the last 30 years, perhaps passed down as "conventional
wisdom."

I'd second that sound advise. I'd add that if you want to keep your
significant other happy and the kids fed/schooled, you should have a
need for a lens before acquiring it. (My gal Susie adds: "Do what he
says, not what he does!") You'll know that need by remembering what
focal length you wish you had had the most since acquiring your last
lens. No book can answer that question for you. However, some of the
exotic focal lengths will be so foreign a perspective to our mind that
only through using them can we begin to visualize their perspective
while hunting for pictures. The 16mm Fisheye is a great example and is
a lens with much more practicality than I ever visualized before using
one.

Ideas:
1. Buddy up with someone on the OM List and go on a shoot. Trading
lenses can really open up your horizons.
2. Buy used and try the lens out. Then sell off lenses that fall out of
favor as you move your way up in acquisitions.
