You might want to consider a Tamron SP 180/2.5. Typical selling price is around $3-350. Very nice lens. And the ED glass should improve on the 180/2.8's color fringing issues. But I don't think the 1.4x would work there. You'd have to use Tamron's BBAR 1.4x.
