I would assume their recommendation is just to save time.  If you leave
the 4Ti on auto and cover the lens, the exposure will take a very long
time.  Shooting two blank shots like this will take several minutes.
Personally I put the camera in manual mode, cover the lens, and shoot
two shots.  If I have a recordata back attached I turn it on so that the
blank leader has a timestamp on it.  That makes cataloguing the negatives
easier.
