Hello all,

I am about to buy an om2spot. I know of the possible "flying shutter
strings"-problem but which om2spots are affected?
All? Manufactured before a certain date?
And when this problem occurs is it hard to fix or is it a relatively
small repair?

Jarno,

As far as I know, the "flying shutter strings" problem does not always
occur and, when it does, it is simply a matter of adjustment (which
should be entrusted to a qualified Oly technician). It's hasn't
happened yet to my 2S (touch wood) after 15 years.

Flying strings can occur in any OM-2S and may be seen at shutter speeds
around 1/15 sec. The procedure I've used to test for flying strings is:

* ensure there is no film in the camera

* remove the lens

* open the camera back

* cut to size and fix a piece of translucent (grease-proof) paper where
the film would normally lie (being careful not to interfere with the
shutter curtains in any way)

* leaving the back open, aim the camera at a bright light source

* fire the shutter repeatedly at 1/15 sec. and watch the grease-proof
paper screen to catch a glimpse of the shadow of the flying strings

* breathe a sigh of relief if no shadow appears.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

=====
