There's an easy workaround for "the ambient light problem". Simply take a
shot of the surroundings in Auto mode (make sure to take a
viewfinder-filling picture) at the aperture you'd like to work at, then
measure the amount of time the camera needs for a proper exposure on your
surroundings. Once you know this, you lock these values into your camera in
Manual/Bulb mode, properly compose the actual shots and take the pictures
where the exposure lasts for the amount of measured time. The big advantage
of doing matters this way is that you will now be able to bring some of the
surroundings into the composition! E.g. if you have a really nice skyline in
your whereabouts, you could do an initial Auto exposure of that skyline
alone, work out an aperture setting where the exposure will last several
seconds at least (say 10-30 or so), then switch to bulb mode, make the
actual composition (capturing lots of sky for the actual fireworks) and
start taking pictures in which you make sure the exposure time lasts as long
as you measured previously, by simply checking a stopwatch and cutting the
exposure off after the measured amount of time has passed...

Good luck!

Cheers,
Olafo
