camera away to say Camtech."

Well, since Olympus cameras are...as you say...somewhat rare, it's unlikely
you'd find a local shop with Olympus service experience. I'd just send it
to John Hermanson to begin with. I wish the former owner of my most
recently acquired OM had.

A few weeks ago I bought an OM-2 that had been "serviced" by a
non-specialist camera shop (the repair number was marked in the film
chamber). The back and mirror foam had been replaced okay, but the camera
just didn't feel right and had a couple of annoying "glitches" like a
"floppy" film rewind knob. I sent it to John so he could check it out.
Sure enough, according to John, a couple of film rewind components had been
re-installed inverted by the previous repair tech and there were other signs
of "tampering".

It costs a little time and money to have the service done right, but it's
worth it. I wouldn't worry too much about the trans-border exchanges,
either. I just bought some Leica stuff from folks in Singapore and Italy.
No problems!
