Well, well! It appears that my dad's friend was a Mark Twain fan! Anyway, Mr. Twain (and Bob) were right! :-)

Thanks,

Chris

When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to
have the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how
much the old man had learned in seven years. -Mark Twain

Of course, part of the Mark Twain joke is the egotism and self satisfaction of the speaker. One could also conclude that the 14 year old was correct and that the same thing happened to him by the time he was 21 that had happened to make his old man stupid. :-)

A friend of mine pointed out once that in a country in which no one reads a book after they get out of school and entertainment movies pass for history the smartest and best educated people are recently graduated 21 year olds. Something to think about.
