I have access to some of my family's photos that I'd like to make copy
negatives of. Most are large (16x20) prints made by a relative when he
headed the physics dept photo team at Princeton University. <snip>
OM CONTENT -- Which lens should I start with to make copies?

So... How would YOU attack this problem?

Unless you really, really want negatives I'd look for a large flat bed
scanner capable of taking your 16x20 prints. In a later message I think
you commented about using Photoshop to stitch together smaller scanned
sections. You could do that if you can't find a large scanner.

Anyhow, that comment implied that you intend to end up with an
electronic image. If you start with a negative your next problem will
be to find a scanner that can get as much out of the negative as you
could get with a flatbed scanner directly off the print.

I think a moderately high res scan with a flat bed is your simplest and
highest quality option. It also avoids passing through another optical
system. Our Oly's are nice optics but every pass through an optical
system will degrade the image a little bit. A good scan on a CD-ROM
probably has greater archival qualities as well... even if you have to
recopy it in 10 years as some seem to think.

ps: I'm working on some old photos now for a scrapbook for my dad.
I've been scanning the old sepia toned images in color on my flatbed in
order to preserve the sepia tone. It works well.
