I bought my first "real" camera around 1973?, a Pentax SP500 with a 28mm
and 135mm as a lightweight travel kit. It worked out very well for this
purpose and i packed it around South and Central America for 3 years.
Although the body was slightly larger than the OM 1 those screw mount
lenses were quite a bit smaller than Zuikos so the net package was about
the same weight. On my return i sold the camera to an engineer in Peru
for more than i paid for it in the US but much less than the price in
Peru so we both got a good deal. I stopped in Panama on the way home and
with the money from my other kit bought a just on the market new OM1,
50/3.5, 28/3.5 and 135/3.5 (plus a Rollie 35) which was my basic kit
until I got back into it a couple of years ago. After carrying that
little SP500 around while others struggled with big lunkers no way was I
going for a Nikon (or Canon or Minolta) the "real" camera of the time.
