To recall my early years taking pictures, I started
when I was about 8yrs with a small medium format
camera given to me by a relative. I had various ones
after that, (Yashica 35mm, 110 YUCK!) etc. But
eventually my father bought an OM2n brand new in
79/80, after he aquired a couple of lenses, he bought
me an OM10 with a standard lens, so I could share the
glass. I was quite happy with that until a trip to the
USSR in 89/90 (where the lighting is tricky for centre
weighed average meters, lots of sun and shadows) and a
lot of my photos didn't come out due to incorrect
exposure. I sold the OM10 and bought an OM4 from shop,
which was great, apart from locking up (while still
under warranty) so it went back and I got a re-fund. I
searched around for a replacement and eventually
bought an OM4Ti (champagne) from the professor of
photography of a university (who was selling some gear
to buy his wife new carpets...) it was mint and I had
it for about 8-10 years. Until the fact I wasn't using
it because of the cost of film and the lure of digital
got to me. I sold it to my father (who was still using
the OM2n) who then went on a zuiko lens buying frenzy
and I bought an Olympus 3030Z digital. Although I've
been happy with the 3030Z and the convenience is
great, I've recently gone back to using film. First I
bought an OM1md with 50F1.8, then some more lenses and
finally an OM4 (almost mint) which was really cheap. I
figure there's a place for digital and film at the
moment, although it was nice to be able to pick up the
OM1 and be able to use it perfectly, even though I've
never owned one or even have the instruction manual.
Oly cameras have this overall "ease of use" that I
think other manufacturers miss out on. Needless to
say, although I don't consider myself old at 28yrs, I
pick up todays "wonderbricks" and can't even work out
how to switch the things on.
Is that progress??

Chris
