John,

MD 2 is better-handling and smoother operating (having counter-rotating motors), but significantly heaver and bulkier. Supports motor rewind, auto 2-frame beginning-of-roll advance, and LCD countdown on the OM 3/4. See the esif for more.

MD 1 is smaller. First version had the big release button taking up the entire top of the grip, but then went to the winder-sized release in the late 70's (Date?). Both take the 15v Nicad Packs 1/2 and the Control grips 1/2. (I wish I still had my old version with the big button, I really liked the handling of that version.)

The Control Grip (CG) takes 12 batteries. You get 18v with 1.5v Alkalines, and 15v with NiCads. I don't know the feasibility of NiMH, but I'd bet that NiCad will give the best performance-to-cost ratio. Balance is nice with the CG, and like all the power options, you can put the batteries in your pocket via a connecting cord if you want. Just make sure to lock the CG's shutter release, or you might fire off 5-10 shots when you lean over. :-) I don't know if there is a speed difference between using the two battery types. I haven't used my CG in 15 years.

The price seems a bit high, but you probably don't have to rebuild the Control Grip, as it uses external batteries. Make sure to figure in the cost of batteries. I've seen $150-200 for a MD1 with the NICad pack commonly. The CG is typically priced higher than a Nicad-Pack, but IMO, not worth it.

The store also had what seemed to be a brand new in box
Motorwind.......Unsure if it is 1 or 2 ? with control grip. Control grip
looked mint - but on quick glance it seemed that the leatherette covering
had shrunk slightly showing the centre join. Shop wanted £320 -$450 but said
they would accept £215 - $300. I am sort of tempted.......How does motor
drive 1 compare to motor drive 2 ? How about the control grip is it as
practical as the ni-cad battery pack ? Does it seem good value for money ?
DO I REALLY NEED IT ? ( My addiction is totally under control!!!!) :-)))) PS. Also recently bought a single T28 flash and twin T28 flash
from listmembers.. Very good buys, great condition, Thanks guys.
