The leather looks cool, and is do-able, but I think the hard part would be
getting the letters and etc. to look right after plating. Any good plater
can strip and plate the parts, but the lettering and numbers are done with
stencils or silkscreened (I think) and would be just about impossible to get
really right any other way. There are a lot of fake Leica Luftwaffa (sp?)
and special edition Leicas out there... and even a lot that started out
chrome but have been painted black.

I saw someone's very good web page about putting on the leather, it looks
like a careful and skilled person's do-it-yourself job, I might have to
check into that -- or maybe just buy the camera Tom's cat likes so much (if
he can get it away from the cat!)  :-)
