Bill,

Maybe try a "zip-tie" around the back part and use the unused
end as a handle to get that critter to come loose...hopefully it
won't deform the ring as the pressure _should_ be equal around
the circumference of the filter.  How to get the ziptie off afterwards 
without scratching your filter is up to you...>;) [might just slide off]

Hmm, how about two boards with inner tube stuck to them, sandwich the 
problem on a table, & turn?

You can get "filter wrenches" which can hold well, tho don't provide 
much leverage.

The problem is keeping the thin metal parts circular, applying even 
pressure around the ring somehow, and not deforming the delicate 
threads.
