Sounds like more crop-circle stuff to me <G>. The real problems start
when you can hear the fungus growing in your lenses!

The sounds are something like crumpling cellophane or perhaps a sheet of newspaper. Also described as someone (something) walking through the field. Although similar, people and even dogs are much louder moving through mature corn. Unless you know the field very, very well and the rows are well defined, entering very far into a corn field this time of year can result in getting lost in it for some time. It's often so densely packed that about 20 feet or so into the field you lose sight of the edge of the field, and it's so tall you cannot see over it.

Did a little research about the noise. It is related to thermal expansion. However, it's not friction; it's the rapid growth and thermal expansion breaking the fibers in the husks. Rapid growth is no joke. It's about knee-high on the 4th of July. A month later it can easily be about 7 feet tall or more. Densely pack enough corn plants into a large field and the noise of "few over here" and "few over there" adds up. Those who've never experienced it are often non-believers.
