While the 500mm mirror lens will be much more compact, less expensive, and
lighter than a normal lens, you will be stuck with one f-stop. Generally, I
think they are also slower. Out of focus light points appear as doughnuts of
light. I have a Celestron C90 (90mm aperture, f/11 1000mm focal length) and
a C8 (8" aperture, 2000mm, f/10) with a t-mount Olympus adaptor. Haven't
used the C8 on terrestrial subjects, but the C90 gives super-telephoto
results that are just "ok". It may be just my experience, but photos seem a
bit flat in the contrast department. Don't have a clue about the Olympus
mirror lens.
Seem to remember that someone published a book on Whooping Cranes shot with
a C8. Saw some of the prints exhibited at the wildlife refuge. Some ok, some
kind of flat.
