Here, Here. (That sounds far too British !) Wasn't going to add to this
argument, but Winsor's comment is just so true. I've had personal
experience recently (at work, not on this list) of "inappropriate" emails
sent. It seems fairly easy to "say what you really feel" in an email, as it
seems so anonymous.

Unfortunately, I am ashamed to say, the person at fault in my case was me -
I sent an email to a colleague and close friend of mine saying stuff which I
would never have had the courage to say in person. She is now not such a
close friend, which I deeply regret.

Whatever you may want to say on the list, think one thing before you hit the
"send" button - "would I say this if the person was standing next to me ?"
If the answer is that you wouldn't have the courage, then confine your email
to the trash bin before you offend through false anonymity. If the answer
is "yes", then fine - send it, but be prepared to face the same consequences
that you would in "real life" situations.

I have learnt through my mistake. It would seem, however, that others may
not have learnt from theirs.

Right, monologue over. Gotta go patch up friendship !

Jon

It is easy to forget what you are about when doing eMail. If you
were at a large gathering of people which this is and someone said
something you did not agree with you would not start yelling at him.
You would just excuse yourself and begin a a conversation with a more
congenial little group. People are going to make judgments about
other people, rightly or wrongly, but where are you allowed to attack
another person in a social setting? At the worst you would be
arrested. At the least you would be considered rude and boorish.

Maybe the people who feel impelled to add their two cents to this
little tiff and let everyone know how they stand on the issue should
think about what they would say or do in person before composing a
message. The people who separate combatants at a social gathering,
not the people who join in and make it a riot.
