I'm thinking about metal frames which are
a bit simpler for me to cope with, and 100% acid-free "conservation" mat
board. Everything needs wire hangars and it should all be matted.
Q: Anyone done their own framing?

Yes.

Q: Anyone know of a good on-line supply house for frames and mats in the US?

I've been making my own for various reasons (spare wood and good saws on hand, etc.). Are you trying to do this on a budget? Could you go to a frame store and buy the frame stock from them? You can probably buy basic metal frames in standard-size kits at a Walmart.

Q: Has anyone used plexiglass for glazing?

I prefer plexiglass.

Q: How does that compare to good quality glass?

If it's unscratched it compares very well to the eye and it is of course much lighter (and ships better if somebody wants to buy your photo).

Q: Anyone framed Ilfochromes (Cibachromes) before? Any special
considerations with them compared to normal glossy prints?

Once upon a time. I now work with digital prints exclusively.

This needs to be relatively simple and inexpensive (hopefully) without
compromising archival quality.

My method is to print leaving at least a 3/8" (c. 15mm) border and mount the print to the archival substrate with mylar corners only. I cut a beveled mat to leave 3/16" (c. 7mm) exposure of the border. The mat holds the print in place, particularly if a double-backed adhesive is used to hold the beveled mat to the substrate. This method has been very satisfactory thus far and allows easy removal of the photo if desired at a later time. No hot or cold mounting, no spray adhesives, no muss, no fuss.

The big problem is cutting the beveled mat. If you don't have a dedicated mat cutter, don't bother trying this the "hard way." Maybe an art store could cut mats for 5 prints at short notice, even if they couldn't do the whole frame job?

Please feel free to contact me off-list if there's anything here of interest.
