Dear all,

<< Subject: Re: [OM] Moderator on List >>

As a fairly new list member but one who feels he has something to contribute
(sometimes), I liked the list as it was at the time I joined it.

It was very friendly and lots of things seemed to be going on in the OM
zuiko-hobbiest's world. The list was a "good find" for me, and has been for
many others, I'm sure. It has:

1. Helped me to find OM equipment
2. Made me aware of other OM websites.
3. Made me aware of OM publicatons which I have later found.
4. Told me lots of things I didn't know already about the OM cameras/lenses.
5. Made me aware of repair services and repair/reliability issues.
6. Taught me photographic techniques.
7. Encouraged me to the go away and look at the stuff I have to answer other
people's questions - ie do some research.
and most importantly
8. Put me in touch with some intelligent people, other OM enthusiasts,
contacts, experienced/talented photographers abd more.

My ideas about the OM list:
1.
I think the important thing has been done, and that was to CLOSE THE LIST TO
NON-SUBSCRIBERS.
2.
This was obvious thing to do in my opinion. When I saw the joining page, it
didn't even occur to me that I might be able to post if I hadn't subscribed.
I was surprised that any list like this would not be 'closed' as described.
3.
Having a fully open list was probably a mistake, which would cause trouble
eventually, and that has now been fixed. It was too vulnerable, but now I
think it's OK.
4.
I don't think we should rush into any kind of over-controlling situation, or
have people get paranoid about a repeat of the kind of thing that just
happened with our "recently departed" list member. I don't think it will.
5.
Anyway once in 4 years is not too bad for a good ol' family argument and
bust-up.
6.
I think everyone needs to be a bit careful about posting off-topic stuff. And
preferably, just not do it, at least not often.
7.
I think we should try out our newly closed list and all be a bit more
cautious, and everything will be fine with it.
8.
I wouldn't have joined an overly "nanny-state" heavily moderated list in the
first place. And I bet a lot of other people wouldn't either. To a newbie, it
would look like completely closed ranks, and would be very off-putting to
many.
9. Having a moderator might destroy the list more quickly than anything else
if we were not careful. For a start, there might be terrible arguments about
who pulls the strings and who has the power to do what.

Anyway, that's it. I hope we stay as we are for the time being.

Kind regards,

Dave Bellamy.
