<< The Contax G2 doesn't offer a mechanical rangefinder. The "manual
focus" is really the old focus confirmation trick from the Olympus OM-F
/ Canon AL-1 QF days. You work the wheel and the camera supposedly
tells you when focus is correct. There is an incredible amount of slop
in the manual wheel before the focus indicator says you are out of
focus. I would have expected a very precise point for the money they
 charge.

I use and enjoy my G2 camera and lenses. They are as sharp as any I have
shot with (this includes some pretty spendy stuff) but......the focus-be it
auto or manual, is as frustrating as Gary explains. You have to work a lot
harder than anyone should to get a shot in focus at times and you are never
sure you got the shot until you get the film back from the lab. With
experience I have become a lot better but it is far from a "point and shoot"
system.
I think camera focus should be broken down into three categories.
AUTO-usually slick and fast, MANUAL- user control and usually dead on, and
CONTAX G- pain in the arse (and that's in auto-focus).
That all said, I think the G system stands out and produces amazing art and
works well with my OM system.
