Unless, of course, you want your tests to have some semblance to how
the lens might be used in the real world. 

My background is in research design, and I'm a fan of pure research.
However, if a lens is going to be used mounted on a tripod with a
camera body on the back, the most useful results will be these from
testing the lens on a tripod with a body. Knowing that a lens
achieves perfect results under perfect settings doesn't help me if it
has a vibration problem in real life conditions.
