A general question, because I guess I'm missing something -- other than the
new cool toy/learning more techniques aspect of it, what's the advantage of
medium format?

Obviously you get larger negatives, so you can make bigger enlargements --
but it seems relatively unlikely I'll be doing anything bigger than 8x12 for
a long while, and I have no problems with the quality of those at 35mm, so
what would I gain from a medium format camera? Is there something else
that's improved?

Your chiropractor's income from the shoulder/back injuries. Never having to hold camera - it is on the heavy tripod. Wallet is much lighter though. Fewer economic choices due to no money left. The LOUD clack of the SLR mirror announcing your presence to all and sundry for a quarter of a mile. Not being bothered by indecision of lens choice if the shutter is quiet. Learning a fascinatingly bizarre new and sometimes very crude metering system or getting very good with an expensive hand held meter.

Seriously, I do not think there is any advantage at all up to 8X12 and lots of disadvantages. I would never have gotten a medium format except for the enlargement possibility.
