That and pre-focus. Personally, I find shooting sports with a manual
focus is very much like hunting or shooting skeet. At the beginning
of each season, I spend a little time actively focusing, and then
everything becomes pretty well automatic. I no longer use split
screen focus screens, and intuitively follow the action with the
focus. Practice is key, and you shouldn't be stingy with film while
you're honing your technique.
