I'll spare you all most of the details I passed along to our friend Tom
in my private message.

But, I will say that AF definately has its place in sports photography,
I'd be lying if I said otherwise. But, one must master their own
techniques and *adapt* to AF in order to master it. A friend of mine who
is just starting out uses Can8n AF stuff (like most all motorsports
photographers...Nik*n or Can*n AF is the norm) and I asked him how he
uses AF. His reply was to the effect that he shoots in manual mode using
tried and true techniques because he can't control the way AF behaves.

His work is at http://www.imagesofmotorsport.com and while all was taken
with latest greatest Wunderbrick AF gear, the shots were manually
focused.

My stuff is all manual focus obviously....

Now, I do know of many whom I consider "the best" in the business who do
use AF very effectively because they have mastered the tools and know
how to make it behave (and all are older shooters with aging eyes BTW).

One thing about motorsports that manual focus is actually suitable for
is that despite the speed, the subject is very predictable. In Stick and
Ball sports predictability is out the window. That said, I shot my son's
little league baseball this year and had some really good results using
my motorsports based techniques, but I can see how a fast AF system is
valuable (once mastered) for sports/action photography.

Tom, you need an E10 with all the toys, and when you tire of it...you
can sell it to me ;-)
