I believe his reference was to the earthquake of 1906. Sinclair died five years before the one of 1989.

I didn't know about (or cannot remember) the TELUS connection, but thanks! My phone service was restored the next day. <g>

Well, I don't know about the rest of Canada, but Alberta (the province where I live, just north of Montana) sent disaster teams as well as dozens of TELUS (phone company) trucks, to help with rescue efforts, humanitarian aid and restoring telecommunications in the area. Lots of puzzled SFers kept looking at the TELUS trucks and saying "Is there a new phone company in town?" Apparently, they'd never *seen* such good service out of their own phone companies! ;-)
