Roger's points were all good, and indeed, Photoshop doesn't do "real"
unsharp masking. The unsharp mask in Photoshop does a form of selective edge
enhancement, making the light pixels along an edge slightly lighter, and the
dark pixels slightly darker.

What exactly does the unsharp mask do to "restore original appearance"?
Doesn't it make the picture, eh well... unsharp?
