Surely there must be some use for them? I've got hundreds of the things in
a box I've been keeping because I know that as soon as I chuck them all I'll
think of _just_ the perfect use..

For what it's worth, uses I've heard of so far:

holding earrings/other small jewellery -- fair enough, but a:not
particularly applicable to me, and b:I can't see this getting rid of more
than half-a-dozen at the outside.

holding small screws/etc -- much more useful, but the same problem of
numbers applies

One trick I did hear of is to get dry ice, chip it into little chunks, put
a chunk in a canister, then seal the top. As the dry ice vaporises, the
canister fills up with more and more CO2, and eventually explodes,
surprising those in its vicinity. That said, it's more of a 'pop' than a
bang (though taping the lid down would probably help), and you need dry
ice.. On the upside, it does mean that the canister is definitely not usable
any more (though littering bits of plastic around is probably bad karma).
