One advantage (that may or may not be worth the $$$ to folks) is that all of the
Zuikos handle similar and use similar sized filters. Focus and zoom in same
direction as other Zuikos for example. I have a very nice Tokina 35-70/2.8, it
takes wonderful photos, but the zoom direction is backwards - drives me nuts!
May not bother others though. Back in the old days when I was more impoverished
I had a rag-tag collection of after market lenses along with some Zuikos. It
seemed like almost every lens used a different sized filter! Often times the
Zuiko equivalent is more compact, important to me, but again not to others.

Build construction is very consistent and high on the Zuikos, not so on third
party lenses, again this may not matter to most folks. In the case of a rarely
used lens it may not matter at all. A lot of my photography is done while
cycling/climbing/hiking, ect. I have had two after market lenses literally fall
apart on me in the field. Never had a problem with the Zuikos. That being said
The Tamron & Tokina lenses I have owned have held up just as well as the Zuikos.

The Tamron 300 f2.8 is a wonderful lens that I think anyone would be happy with.
While I don't own one I have seen and played with one and it is nice, and a LOT
less than the Zuiko 350. One other advantage to the Tamron lenses is that with
the adaptall mount they can be used on other camera bodies, gives you a great
re-sale market and a ready source of used lenses.

I would love to play with the Tamron 80-200/2.8. That is a lens that I have
never seen, but would be real nice to use I think.

I guess in a nutshell it boils down to the fact that things are not always as
simple as they would appear on the surface. For some people and uses the Zuikos
are worth every penny extra, for others this will not be the case.
