I think that it's only the stop bath that smells. Remedy: don't use stop bath as water seems to work pretty well.

Hi Dan,

There are a couple of reasons why I'm not tempted setting up a darkroom in
my home. Cost would be the first. For the amount of time that I would use
it, at present, it just would not be worth the cost. Second reason would be
chemical smell. Unless the chemicals have changed over the past twenty
years, they are strong and I don't think my wife will allow me to stink up
the house.

The c-41 process b&w film suggestions are good. I use T400CN and find it
works fairly well. I've heard good things about the Ilford, and I'll try
that soon. However, I personally want the print control that comes with
doing your own darkroom work. I love colour nature photos, bu there's
something about b&w that really captivates me. I've heard it suggested that
colour photography is like watching a movie, whereas b&w is like reading the
book. The suggestions for taking a photography course are good ones to gain
access to a darkroom, and I'm joining a local photo club for exactly that
reason.
