what would happen if i used a red (or yellow) filter, or say an IR? filter
(same as red?) with regular colour film? what about b/w c41 film?

If you use an IR filter with a "normal" film (either BW or color) you will
see nothing! IR filter transmit only the IR part of the spectrum where
"normal" films are not sensitive.
Yellow, orange and red filter can be also used with BW for eliminating some
little fog.
