The only way to check for foam above the prism is to remove the top cover.

The foam is there to prevent possible stray light (from the shoe mount?) from
reaching the photocells and throwing the reading off.  In reality not much
stray light, if any, reaches the photocells from that area.  The foam is
usually just removed and not replaced.

Once you can see the damage it's too late.  It's best to remove it before
any damage is visible.  Removal of the foam should only be done by a
competent repair tech and isn't a do it yourself project.  It's usually
done as part of a CLA so there is little or no extra cost added to remove
the foam.
