I'm not trying to start a religious war, but "Photoshop generally runs

bet is that Photoshop 6, which is what I use, runs as well on my P4-1.7 with
1GB ram as it does on any Mac.

It probably does, although some of the 1GB dual-G4 boxes might beat you
out for raw speed on some filter operations. However, in my experience
and that of my relatively impoverished graphic-artist pals, Photoshop on
a 128M G3-400 (Currently well under $1K) beats the daylights out of
Photoshop on a similarly priced PC. The Mac version appears to be much
less starved for RAM (which is not so important these days but still not
completely irrelevant) and the overall stability and smoothness of the
user experience seem better.

Some of this may just be the crowd I run in, where everyone from retouchers
to font designers to system administrators stays as far away from Windows
as they can, and the overwhelming use of Macs in the graphic arts community
may indeed just be a historical accident at this point.
