Finally I found the reference in Ansel Adams to a good exposure for the 
moon, one that preserves all or many of the nuances of the surface relief.

He gives it on page 127 of "The Negative", and it is, 
for ASA 64 film, 1/60 second at f/8.

I've used this to good effect, even exposing a whole roll with moon-shots then 
re-winding for double exposures.

It is worth remembering that the moon moves across the sky at the rate of 
one diameter every three minutes.
