It's still alive and well in Oz particularly in the privately funded
education area. We figure prominently in international debating contests for
secondary school students. Which probably accounts for the articulate and
statesman-like deliverances of our senior politicians, :-).

It hadn't disappeared as of the time of my education--alas, some years ago,
now.  The main thing it taught me was to be able to think on my feet.  You
can not rely on notes but must be aware of what the opposing side proposes.
