If you are useing your camera's 'averagin' meter, then what you are
going to get is an average exposure for both the dark and the light,
which attempts to render the shole scene as close to a middle tone as
possible.

If you are talking bright sunlight in woods forget your meter all
together and try exposing for the sunlight using the 'sunny 16' rule.
