This reminds me of a joke which was told to me by a Russian engineer:

The Americans had recently "obtained" some blueprints of the latest
Soviet fighter jet, and decided that they wanted to build a copy to see
how
it worked. A team of engineers used the blueprints and spent 6 months
building the missile. When completed, the object they built looked
remarkably like a Lada (a poorly-built Russian auto - apologies to any
Lada aficionados out there)! Determined to get it right, they tried
again, and meticulously followed the blueprints only to have another
Lada 6 months later. Frustrated, they then find some Russian engineers
who had defected to the US and let them have a go. 6 months later, the
American engineers see how the Russians are doing, and are surprised to
find that they have built a copy of the airplane! The Americans ask the
Russians how they did it, and the Russians reply: "You missed the most
important instruction on the blueprint! In the corner it says 'File
parts to fit.'"
