I have a serious student whose father will be buying her a camera for
Christmas. His budget is around $300 (used isn't an option). I
recommended the Nikon FE10, and the camera shop recommended the
Pentax ZX-M. from my perspective, the long term compatibility with
the full range of the Nikon system gives the Nikon the edge. On the
other hand, the school has a K-1000, so she's used to Pentax, and
she'd be able to use any lenses or accessories the school has for the
next year and a half.
Her father is calling me tomorrow for advice on his decision. What
should I say?
Looks like it's too late now, but I'd go for the Pentax. If she's
really serious, she won't be staying with either the Pentax or the
FE-10, so it would be better for her to leverage her budget by
borrowing lenses (besides, if a used camera can't be considered, used
glass likely won't be, either, running into even more $$$). Once she
has a better idea of the kinds of photography she'd like to do, she
can pop for the "lifetime" system. And maybe by then she won't
overlook used equipment.
