Hi John,
I started out with John Hedgcoe's "The Photographer's Handbook" (1981, ISBN:
0-394-40754-7). Lots and lots of basic info, and it's a relatively compact
size, which made it easy to tuck into the back "document pocket" of a camera
bag. It's been updated since my copy, and is still available.
