Scanners can be a bit of a can of worms but for less than $500 I'd
recommend the Acer Scanwit 2720.  I believe in the US it'll cost around
$300, and I've found it a very fine performer.  It has plenty enough
resolution for 8x12 prints, and is probably good for larger ones as well
but my printer won't print bigger than A4.  With a small amount of
calibration I've found it does a very fine job.  I use mostly slides,
but I've scanned quite a lot of negatives as well.  No problems with
either.  There's a wealth of useful info at
