Bob:

I have thought about a gathering off and on for some time. I have hosted
several conferences for different groups (photo and non-photo) and have a
working relationship with several of the local motels and restaurants. A
block of rooms at a discount rate of some sort could easily be arranged,
depending on the numbers interested, and there are a number of places we
could get a room set aside for dining as a group. Make it a weekend or
longer, whatever works for everyone. I imagine a lot would depend on how
far a person is traveling, whether driving or flying in, etc.

Without too much thought, two possible outdoor destinations that pop into
mind are the Tallgrass National Park, http://www.parktrust.org/zbar.html or
the Konza Prairie, http://www.ksu.edu/konza/. Both are an easy day trip
from here and would be an interesting (dare I say educational?) trip for
photographers as well as non-photographer family members. Both places offer
opportunities for all focal lengths and possibilities for scenic, wildlife,
and macro shooting. These places are best visited in the spring, late April
or early May. .

You're absolutely right about planning ahead, the sooner we can get to the
motels the better the discounts. Around here the only weekends to avoid are
the ones when the major races (NHRA) come to Heartland Park, unless that
would make a better field trip? Only problem with that is rooms are booked
solid months and in a few cases a full year ahead of the event, camping
space is plentiful though........(Actually for non-credentialed
photographers, the SCCA club race weekends offer better photo opportunities,
they're not as crowded, and the admission is cheap. When I go by myself, I
can usually get in by signing in as a crew member. If that doesn't work
they only charge $10.00 to get in.)

Anything interesting? Anybody interested? Let's hear about it, or throw
out some other ideas.........
