Scott,
If I understand your question correctly, you want to have a vertical
reference line superimposed temporarily on the image, right?  I don't know
if you're using version 5 or not.  I am and I've found a "grid" located at
the pull down menu called "View", then "View Grid".  You can also toggle it
with a Control key in combination with the so-called double quotes key.
