What I've used on many things, but not a camera so far, is book-mending tape,
specifically Scotch (3M) Book Tape 845, 3 inches wide. It's a thick mylar,
with an aggressive adhesive, and stands up quite well. It's the stuff used to
repair the backs of library books and the like. On can buy it at office supply
and stationary stores, perhaps needing to special-order it. A roll (3" wide by
540 inches long) cost US $9.00 a year ago at a local stationary store.

Remove old adhesive using lighter fluid or mineral spirits. These are safe on
the chrome and the black paint, but it's best to keep them away from the
leather, as they may cause the leather to come loose from the body. Use a
q-tip to apply and a paper towel to clean up.

I'd be too afraid that I'd drop the camera, and so wouldn't be able to stay
focused on photography.

It strikes me that a one-inch diameter round leather washer pushed over the
stud before attaching the ring and strap would also work. One can make such
washers by hand with only a sharp knife. Suitable leather can be gotten from
the scrap barrel of one of those places that will upolster furniture in leather.
